Graft, follicle and hair:
the units behind a quote.

A graft is one follicular unit (the natural cluster that leaves the scalp together), and it carries about two hairs. Korean clinics quote per hair, the unit their fee schedules call “mo”. Turkish, Japanese, Thai and Indian clinics quote per graft. So a Seoul quote of 3,000 and an Istanbul quote of 3,000 differ by roughly a factor of two before anybody mentions money. This is not a subtlety and it is not our inference: the Seoul fee schedule we cite states the two-hairs-per-follicle conversion in its own footnote. It is simply never mentioned to people comparing across borders, which is most of the people comparing at all.

Hair, follicle, graft: the three units defined.

A hair is a single strand. A follicular unit is the natural grouping of one to four hairs that shares a single exit point on the scalp, along with its sebaceous glands and tiny muscle. It is an anatomical structure, not a surgical invention. A graft is what the surgeon moves, and in modern FUE a graft is one follicular unit. So graft and follicle are effectively interchangeable; hair is the odd one out, and it is the one Korea prices in.

Two hairs per follicle is an average, not a constant. Single-hair units exist and are deliberately used at the very front of a hairline, where a two- or three-hair graft would look like a tuft. Three- and four-hair units are placed further back for density. When a clinic plans a hairline they are choosing which units go where, which is why a plan described only as a number of grafts is describing about half of the actual decision.

Why it matters twice

Two conversions: the price, and the donor budget.

The price consequence is the obvious one: convert to a common unit before comparing, or the comparison is meaningless. Divide any per-hair figure by about two to reach grafts, then check what each price includes, since a Turkish package covers hotel and transfers while Korean and Japanese figures are typically surgery only. The pricing page does that conversion across six markets.

The consequence that actually matters is the other one. Your donor area is limited in follicular units, not in hairs: the published safe extraction limits are expressed as units per cm², and what you have to spend is a lifetime budget of units. A quote in hairs therefore obscures the only number that is genuinely scarce. If you are told 6,000 hairs, the question to ask is how many follicular units that is, what your donor density measures, and what will be left behind afterwards. How many hairs are in one hair transplant graft?

How do I convert a per-hair quote to grafts?
Divide by about two. A published Seoul fee schedule states that one follicle averages two hairs for non-incision work, so a quote of 5,000 hairs is roughly 2,500 grafts and 3,000 hairs is roughly 1,500 grafts. Ask the clinic to confirm their own average, since it varies with the individual and with technique.
Which unit should I compare quotes in?
Grafts, because four of the five markets use it and because grafts are what the donor area is actually limited in. Convert any per-hair figure to grafts first, then compare.
